‘Tottenham star has bigger ceiling than Morgan Gibbs-White, we just need to see it’
Tottenham have been told that Xavi Simons was the better alternative to Morgan Gibbs-White, even if Thomas Frank doesn’t think so.
Simons was benched for the fourth consecutive time in Tottenham’s 2-2 draw against Newcastle United in the Premier League on Tuesday.
Tottenham signed Simons from RB Leipzig with the intention of making him their marquee signing.
However, his time in North London so far has been nothing but disappointments and missed opportunities.

Xavi Simons can be a better player than Morgan Gibbs-White
Tottenham desperately wanted to sign Morgan Gibbs-White from Nottingham Forest over the summer.
The Lilywhites came close, agreeing personal terms with the midfielder, but Forest ended up blocking the transfer. Soon after, the England international signed a new contract.
As a result, Spurs turned their attention to Simons, who, given his treatment these past couple of games, clearly wasn’t Frank’s first-choice option.
Regardless of what the Dane does or does not think, speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Tottenham expert and Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham believes that Simons has a higher ceiling than Gibbs-White.
“Gibbs-White, everyone knew he’d be like a plug-and-play player, you sign him, and you know you’re going to get eight out of 10 every week,” Wenham said.

“We’re seeing that now he’s scored at Anfield last week, and he’s now got over the failed move, and he’s flying again. So frustrating.
“I think overall, Simons has a bigger ceiling, shall I say, than Gibbs-White in terms of where he can go with his football career. We just need to see it.”

What Thomas Frank’s done says it all about his thoughts on Simons
As talented as Simons is, Frank quite obviously is not convinced by his profile.
This is evident in the way the Lilywhites build up, where the Dane looks to attack with his wingers in a ‘U’ shape, which limits the midfielder’s impact on the pitch.
Furthermore, his inconsistent playing time highlights that Frank isn’t quite convinced by him as it stands.
- Simons last start game against Manchester United
- He has just six Premier League games this season
The attacking midfielder is one of the best midfield talents of his generation, and he’s currently being wasted in North London.
After missing out on Gibbs-White and Eberechi Eze, there’s an argument to be made that Simons was a panic buy.
If this rings true, it’ll be difficult for him to thrive under Frank and thus he could soon be added to the long list of failed Tottenham transfers.
