Tottenham: Real Madrid admission emerges as Ange Postecoglou praises ‘Oustanding’ Rodrigo Bentancur
John Wenham believes Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur is a “Real Madrid-level” player.
The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose has backed the Uruguay international to become a key man in North London next season following an injury-hit past calendar year for the midfielder.
Bentancur was introduced at half-time against Nottingham Forest on Sunday (7 April) alongside Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, with Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissoma making way.
And with the score level at 1-1, the 26-year-old helped Tottenham turn things around as the home side would score twice in the second half to win 3-1 and move fourth in the Premier League.
Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes that supporters might have forgotten just how good a player Bentancur can be.
“I believe Bentancur will have a big impact next season when he gets back to those levels that we know he’s capable of playing at.
“We have seen glimpses of it this season and I don’t want fans to forget about how good he is.
“For me, he is a Real Madrid-level player. That’s the calibre that we’re talking about with Bentancur, and he just needs to find that consistency again.”
Rodrigo Bentancur changed the game for Tottenham in victory over Nottingham Forest
It was a game of two halves at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with the hosts much-improved during the second 45 minutes.
The key change was the introduction of both Hojbjerg and Bentancur at the break, and it is hard to deny the impact Postecoglou’s midfield shuffle had on the outcome of the match.
Speaking after full-time, the Australian was delighted with the performances of his half-time substitutes, stating (via Evening Standard, 7 April), “I thought Pierre (Hojbjerg) and Roddy (Bentancur) were outstanding in the energy they brought and the quality they brought in the second half.”

If Bentancur can perform at a high level consistently, Spurs’ midfield depth could be frightening next season, especially with Lucas Bergvall set to arrive in N17.
