Tottenham: Pundit shares unconvinced Djed Spence verdict after Fabrizio Romano transfer update
We’re delighted to welcome former Scotland right-back Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium…
Alan Hutton isn’t convinced that a loan switch to Genoa is the best move for Djed Spence, but does admit that it makes sense for Tottenham to offer his services to get the Radu Dragusin transfer over the line.
Spence, who spent the first half of the season on loan with Leeds United, is reportedly set to join Genoa on a temporary basis for the second half of the season with the Serie A side able to make his stay permanent in the summer [Fabrizio Romano, 10 January].
The deal has helped Tottenham negotiate the signing of Dragusin as Ange Postecoglou looks to strengthen his backline which has been ravaged by injury in the last few weeks.
Spence has struggled to make an impact in North London since arriving from Middlesbrough in 2022 and has struggled on loan with both Leeds and Rennes and Hutton has suggested it might be best for his career if he remains with Tottenham.
“For Djed Spence, it has to be right for him,” Hutton told Tottenham News.
“He’s not had the best of times at Leeds so for him to go to a foreign country on loan, is that the best move for him? I don’t know if he has a wife, girlfriend or children but is the best move for him to stay around his family here and try to get everything back on track.
“It’s all down to him. Maybe he’s a free spirit and is quite happy going there and that’ll be good for him. It’s an interesting one but I can see why he’s linked with that deal to get it over the line.
“Tottenham have fallen just short of the valuation so it’s something to monitor.”

Spence only made seven appearances for Daniel Farke’s side during his loan switch to Elland Road, starting on only five occasions, having suffered with a knee injury during the early stages of his tenure.
Across those seven outings, he failed to register a single goal or assist. Still, he did produce a couple of impressive performances over the festive period against the likes of Ipswich Town and Sunderland as Leeds continued their push for the automatic promotion places.
In other Tottenham news, Alan Shearer has been blown away by Destiny Udogie’s performances this season and has named him in his team of the season
