Tottenham players slammed after ‘ridiculous’ Ange Postecoglou sack reaction

Tottenham fans and players alike are still coming to terms with Ange Postecoglou’s dismissal.

Spurs’ hierarchy left everyone in the dark over their decision for almost two weeks after the season ended before finally announcing Postecoglou’s departure on Friday (6 June).

Daniel Levy has come under criticism from various pundits for both the delay and not signing off with his name on the official Spurs statement.

In addition, Tottenham supporters have made their feelings clear, while the players’ thoughts on the situation have also emerged.

Tottenham stars criticised for angry response to Postecoglou news

As reported by The Telegraph (6 June), the Tottenham players are thought to be furious about the decision to sack Postecoglou.

Some are even considering quitting the North London club this summer as a result.

However, ex-Spurs scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively with Tottenham News – believes the players need to get over themselves.

“That decision has obviously been in the pipeline,” King said.

“It should have been confirmed 48 hours after the Europa League final. Allowing Postecoglou to be part of the parade has only enraged supporters and turned them further against Levy.

“However, that news about the players being unhappy, what a load of rubbish. If they cared so deeply about Postecoglou, why did they lose 22 games in the Premier League? It is absolute nonsense.

“They signed a contract; they’re playing for Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. If you’re so upset, you should have performed better, and maybe Postecoglou wouldn’t have been sacked. You’re playing for Tottenham, whatever manager is brought in, that is who you’re going to play for.

“Get on with playing football, and don’t lose 22 out of 38 league games. It was the right decision at the end of the day. Suddenly, all the players are behind him. It didn’t look that way to me.

“This knee-jerk reaction we’ve seen from the players is ridiculous. You play for a football club, they pay you, the manager doesn’t. Managers lose their jobs, that is football – these players need to get on with things.”

Spurs must keep control of the dressing room

The risk Levy took in relieving Postecoglou of his duties can only be evaluated a few years down the line, depending on how Tottenham proceed from here.

More pressingly, the potential repercussions on the dressing room must be sorted out, with players like Cristian Romero likely to leave on the back of the club’s decision.

The chairman will hope that the new manager, currently tipped to be Thomas Frank, will be able to quickly settle the squad down and refocus the players to prevent any sour scenes from developing.
