Tottenham: Permanent Brentford transfer on cards for Sergio Reguilon amid Destiny Udogie update
Tottenham left-back Sergio Reguilon will be keen to make his stay with Brentford permanent after a reasonable start to his loan spell at the Gtech Community Stadium, according to Alan Hutton.
The Spanish defender joined the ranks in North London in 2020 for £32million from Real Madrid but has since enjoyed three loan spells away from Spurs, the latest of which saw him join Thomas Frank’s side in January [Sky Sports, 19 September 2020].
Reguilon has enjoyed a reasonable start at Brentford, making seven appearances for the Bees after a difficult first half of the season on loan with Manchester United where the 27-year-old struggled for regular minutes under Erik Ten Hag.
But Hutton still doesn’t believe the defender has what it takes to push Destiny Udogie out of Postecoglou’s starting XI next season and has suggested it would be best for all parties if Spurs agreed a permanent sale with Brentford.
“I don’t think he’ll drop Udogie,” Hutton told Tottenham News.
“He just signed a seven-and-a-half-year contract and he just suits the role perfectly. He’s young, he’s obviously got a lot of talent, the energy levels that he’s got. He can come inside the pitch like Ange wants to get involved in play, he’s such a good player.
“He’s only going to get better I think because he’s so young and has so much potential. Unfortunately for Reguilon, I don’t see him getting into that team. Again he’s another one that’s had multiple opportunities and it’s not quite worked for him.
“Sometimes when you go out on loan and you’re playing well, that’s a good thing. He’s happy now with Brentford, he’s playing well so it could be a case where he says ‘Let me stay here, let me concentrate’ and if the fee can be agreed you can see where it goes.”
Will Sergio Reguilon leave Tottenham permanently in the summer transfer window?
Brentford’s current loan deal for Reguilon reportedly doesn’t include either an option or obligation to buy clause, but that doesn’t mean that Frank at those around him in the Bees’ recruitment team wouldn’t be interested in a deal [Sky Sports, 17 January].

Udogie has been one of the standout stars at Spurs since Postecoglou arrived in the summer and when the Italian defender is fit, he will start week in and week out in the Premier League, leaving very little opportunity for Reguilon to get regular minutes.
Hopefully, Tottenham can work out some sort of deal to get him off of the books come the end of the season, that way, his wages and any potential transfer fee can be reinvested into other, more pressing areas of the squad.
In other Tottenham news, Postecoglou is understood to be safe from the sack no matter what happens at Spurs this season
