Tottenham open themselves up to sign Conor Gallagher in eleventh-hour January transfer – Expert

Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…

John Wenham believes Tottenham prefer a move for Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher over Arthur Vermeeren, who looks set to seal a switch to Atletico Madrid.

As per The Sun (26 December), Ange Postecoglou’s side had been linked with a move for Royal Antwerp midfielder Vermeeren.

However, according to Fabrizio Romano, who shared an update via his official X account (25 January), the Belgian is now on the verge of completing a move to Atletico Madrid, with the agreement sealed and medical tests planned for the morning of Friday 26 January.

While some supporters might be left frustrated that Spurs have missed out on a top young player, Wenham believes there are other factors at play.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “You can’t sign them all, unfortunately.

“I think with Rodrigo Bentancur coming back into the team, with the evolution of Pape Matar Sarr which we have seen this season, I think we’re just very well settled in that position.

“I also suspect Tottenham are leaving themselves open for a potential late swoop for Conor Gallagher. I think that is the club’s target, and I’m fully behind that.

“If Vermeeren turns out to be a top player, people will say Tottenham missed out, but perhaps he just wants to make the move to Atletico Madrid.

“This is not some small club we’re talking about, this is a top European team. They have played in two Champions League finals in recent years, they have a phenomenal stadium and they’re always fighting at the top of La Liga.

“It’s a big move for him and good luck to him because at the end of the day, we can’t sign everybody.”
