Tottenham: Nico Williams transfer would be welcomed with arms wide open amid £100,000-a-week news
John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose would “welcome” Nico Williams to Tottenham “with open arms”.
According to The Mirror (9 March), Spurs are interested in Williams and are set to compete with their London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea for his signature.
Williams signed a new contract with Athletic Bilbao in December which has a £43million release clause which could be triggered this summer.
The 21-year-old forward earns more than £100,000 per week after tax in the Basque Country, which could make his arrival at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium an expensive one.
However, Wenham has waxed lyrical about the Spanaird and would be keen to see Spurs take their interest further.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham, the founder of reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose, said: “Williams is a good young talent.
“It appears that Tottenham are going to invest in a wide forward this summer, with that position seemingly the main target. Williams is a player who appears to be very highly regarded and rated.
“He’s probably someone who is on the shortlist of 20 to 30 of Europe’s biggest clubs.
“If Spurs decided to pursue him, I’d welcome him with open arms. He has real pace, he can cause problems out wide, and he seems to be involved in a lot of big games.”
Could Tottenham beat Arsenal and Chelsea to the signing of Nico Williams?
Historically Spurs have struggled to compete with their London rivals both on and off the pitch, but after their recent commercial successes, the club are now the biggest financial powerhouse in the capital.
If Daniel Levy decided to act on his interest, there is no reason why he wouldn’t be able to lure Williams to North London.
Spurs have had plenty of success signing young players in recent months, and although Williams is perhaps slightly more high-profile than the likes of Lucas Bergvall or Luka Vuskovic, a potential move to Spurs might still tempt him.
Ange Postecoglou has got the club playing some exciting football which is ideal for a tricky winger like Williams.

And not only does the La Liga star cause problems on the wing, he can chip in with a goal or assist too, which could make him the perfect forward for Postecoglou.
In other Tottenham news, Wenham has named one fringe player who he feels can keep a “world-class” first-team regular at Spurs on the bench.
