Tottenham new title causes buzz as ‘fantastic’ financial development emerges from North London

Paul Robinson admits it is “fantastic” for Tottenham to be the new richest club in London but would swap that mantle for some trophy wins.

In Deloitte’s 2024 Football Money League Spurs were named as the club with the eighth-highest revenue in world football with €631.5million [£539.2m], one place ahead of Chelsea, thanks to significant increases in commercial and broadcasting figures.

Robinson believes it ties in with a noticeable increase in the standards across all areas at Tottenham but feels the results on the pitch have not yet followed suit.

However, the former England keeper feels that with Ange Postecoglou in place and the style of play the team now has the “building blocks” are in place for success to follow.

“It’s obviously a fantastic thing for the club to be named the richest in London,” he exclusively told Tottenham News.

“But I think a lot of the supporters, myself included, would swap ‘The Richest Club in London’ for a few trophies and appearances in the Champions League.

“The richest club in London, with the best stadium, the best training ground, best facilities, everything that they’ve got is becoming the best, apart from what’s on the pitch.

“But it’s getting there. The manager’s in place. The style of football’s there. The building blocks are in place.

“But the richest club in London goes along with the best in all those areas, so there’s got to be some trophies, there’s got to be success on the pitch.

“That has to be the next thing that follows.”

Trophies must follow increased standards at Tottenham

It looks like a measure of the differing directions of travel at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Stamford Bridge of late that this symbolic milestone has been reached.

The stadium itself is a large part of the driving force behind it, but while it should increasingly help put Spurs in a better position to win trophies it is not necessarily a grand achievement in and of itself.

Plenty of supporters would echo Robinson’s view that it doesn’t mean much if the footballing success doesn’t follow, but while it is still very early days under Postecoglou it does feel like the Australian is building something.
