Tottenham must sign Marc Guehi in alternative transfer as ‘bidding war’ mooted
Paul Robinson has urged Tottenham to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi instead of getting involved in a bidding war for Jarrad Branthwaite this summer.
According to The Daily Mail [18 May], Spurs are one of the many clubs keeping tabs on the 21-year-old, with Manchester United and Manchester City preparing for a transfer battle.
Due to the ongoing financial issues at Goodison Park this season, the Toffees could offload Branthwaite to avoid any further PSR breaches, though Robinson believes Guehi might be the better option.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, he said: “They need another centre-half, some more backup in that area. Dragusin hasn’t really had an opportunity since arriving in January, coming on as a substitute a couple of times. He’s also played as a holding midfielder in games that Spurs were trying to hold on in.
“Romero is going to get suspended at some point, and he’s also going to get injured. We’ve seen van de Ven suffer two hamstring injuries this season, so if they lose both at the same time, which we have done going to Manchester City with four full-backs, that’s not something they can afford to happen.
“Jarrad Branthwaite is a great talent. Whoever gets him this summer will have to overpay because of Everton’s financial situation. If they’re willing to sell, Spurs will be in a bidding war with many other clubs.
“I’d look at Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, I really would. For a lesser value, you’re getting a more experienced player, one that’s in the England squad, a player who has proven he can do it at the top level for a long period of time.
“If you’re looking at those two, I’d take Guehi because he would come straight in and make an impact.
“With Branthwaite, you’re bringing in talent but you’re overpaying for it because of where he is and the financial status.
“He’s a top-class player. Somebody is going to get a very good player in Jarrad Branthwaite. From a Spurs’ point of view, they’re going to go into a bidding war. If they can win that, absolutely get the player in, but a player like Guehi would be a great alternative.”
Tottenham to sign Marc Guehi over Jarrad Branthwaite this summer
With over a century of appearances at Selhurst Park since July 2021, Guehi has become a key part of Crystal Palace’s squad and was certainly missed throughout the 2023/24 campaign.

The 23-year-old missed 12 Premier League matches due to a knee injury, though as club captain, he returned for the final two matches of the season, and may have played his final match for the Eagles in a 5-0 win over Aston Villa.
Guehi would certainly be a cheaper option than a defender like Branthwaite, which could be the main concern for Daniel Levy this summer.
