Tottenham ‘lucky’ against Brentford as Destiny Udogie and Rodrigo Bentancur disappoint – Spurs Expert

Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…

John Wenham believes Tottenham were “lucky” against Brentford with the performances of Destiny Udogie and Rodrigo Bentancur particularly “disappointing”.

Spurs came from behind to beat the Bees 3-2 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday 31 January.

Heading into half-time 1-0 down after Neal Maupay had opened the scoring, Spurs came out fired up in the second half as Udogie, Brennan Johnson and Richarlison all found themselves on the scoresheet by the 56th minute.

Ivan Toney pulled one back for the visitors, but Tottenham held on to return to the Premier League’s top four, and while the result was ultimately positive, Wenham was not happy at all with what he saw.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “If I am being brutally honest, we didn’t actually play very well.

“We had an incredible 10-minute spell, but apart from that, Brentford handled us with ease.

“In that first half, we kept crossing balls into the box, and it felt like that could have gone on for another six hours and everything would just be headed clear.

“I know he scored, but other than that Udogie was pretty poor on the night, which was very unusual for him as he is normally one of our outstanding players. Bentancur was also quite poor, so there were a range of disappointing performances from some of our most reliable players.

“I felt Brentford were pretty good and we were quite lucky to get the three points.

“I thought we’d win quite comfortably heading into the match, and I think Postecoglou would have probably been left quite frustrated with the performance.”

In other Tottenham news, Spurs could be boosted by the return of one 100 per cent ace against Everton.
