Tottenham loanee Timo Werner ‘needs to do more’ despite improved display in Brentford win – Spurs Expert
Tottenham News is delighted to welcome aboard our brilliant new columnist Bryan King, the former goalkeeper who spent six years as a senior scout at Spurs and 28 years in total in first-team scouting roles. Bryan also spent eight years on Everton’s recruitment team and 11 years scouting at Aston Villa across two different spells.
Ex-Spurs scout Bryan King believes Tottenham loanee Timo Werner “still needs to do more” despite grabbing an assist against Brentford.
Spurs returned to the Premier League’s top four with a 3-2 win over the Bees at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday 31 January.
Having gone into the break a goal behind after Neal Maupay’s early opener, the hosts flipped the match on its head with three goals in seven second-half minutes.
Werner was at the centre of two of those goals and had arguably his best display in a Spurs shirt to date, grabbing an assist, hitting the woodwork, playing three key passes and winning three of his four ground duels (Sofascore).
Despite Werner’s much-improved performance, King is still not convinced by the German.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, King said: “Werner was non-existent in the first half, but in the second half he was more involved and he used his pace well which helped him set up a couple of goals.
“He still needs to do more for me over the course of 90 minutes but he certainly improved after the break.
“It was his first-half performance which worries me. The tempo went up in the second half and Spurs were getting the ball forward far quicker which left space for Werner to exploit. However, when the game was slowed down he struggled to find his feet.
“Having said that, he did well with his assist for the second goal, his ball to Brennan Johnson at the back post was a good ball, it was low and it had pace.

“I feel that he needs a goal now just to take his performances to the next level.”
