Tottenham: Leon Bailey blasted for diving as Aston Villa slammed by John Wenham

John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose believes Tottenham made Aston Villa look “dreadful” and is not interested in any excuses from Unai Emery’s side.

Ange Postecoglou recorded his biggest win as Spurs boss as his side thrashed their top-four rivals 4-0 at Villa Park on Sunday (10 March).

It was a big win which saw Tottenham cut the gap to Aston Villa and the Premier League top four to two points while still boasting a game in hand.

Despite Villa’s clash with Ajax in the UEFA Europa Conference League a few days prior, Wenham is not interested in hearing any excuses from supporters of the West Midlands club.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham, the founder of reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose, said: “I’ve got zero interest in people saying that Villa were tired after their European game.

“That is a poor excuse, Tottenham have been on the other end of that for 20 years, constantly playing clubs such as Villa that weren’t in Europe.

“I thought the result was down to us making Villa look absolutely dreadful on that day.

“Leon Bailey, who’s had a really good season, offered nothing but a bit of diving and was then substituted.

“Ollie Watkins couldn’t get into the game at all, and I thought Youri Tielemans was awful, he seemed to just be going through the motions.”

Tottenham showed their class at Villa Park as the race for UEFA Champions League heats up

Spurs were certainly the better side at Villa Park, that goes without saying.

Postecoglou’s players needed to turn up and they did, with Son Heung-min and Brennan Johnson in particular both standing out.

It was a huge win which puts UEFA Champions League qualification back in Spurs’ hands, although they must ensure they captalise by picking up three points in their game in hand.

Had they lost, the possibility of finishing in the top four would have suddenly seemed very far-fetched and under the pressure of what was perhaps their biggest game of the season, Spurs showed their quality.

Beating their direct rivals for a top-four finish could be seen as a big momentum swinger, and Villa must now dust themselves off and respond to the bruising setback while Spurs will look to build on the win when they travel to Craven Cottage to take on Fulham on Saturday (16 March).
