Tottenham: King unsurprised as £43million Nico Williams transfer update emerges in North London

Ex-Tottenham scout Bryan King is unsurprised that Athletic Bilbao and Spain forward Nico Williams is “of interest” in North London

As previously reported by The Mirror (9 March), Spurs are set to rival both Arsenal and Chelsea for Williams’ signature.

Despite signing a new three-year contract with Athletic Bilbao in December, Williams has a £43million release clause which could see him leave the Basque Country this summer.

He reportedly earns more than £100,000 per week after tax, which could lead to his signing being a very expensive one for any club that decides to pursue a deal.

In light of this transfer news, King has offered his verdict on Williams’ potential switch to the Premier League.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, King said: “Tottenham must be following him as any top club would.

“If there is an interesting player anywhere in Europe you are going to be tracking him, and seeing how his performances are going and see what his availability is, if that is the type of player you want to bring in.

“He is quick, and plays on the right-hand side so he could be of interest.”

Could Tottenham sign Nico Williams to play under Ange Postecoglou this summer?

Ange Postecoglou has proven during his short time in the Premier League so far that he is a fan of speedy wingers.

The signings of Brennan Johnson and Timo Werner demonstrate this fact, and Williams could be the latest tricky wide player to arrive at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Not only is Williams capable of causing issues on the wing, but the 21-year-old can also chip in with goal contributions, having scored six times and provided 12 assists in all competitions in Spain this season.

Postecoglou likes versatile forwards who can offer a goal threat, and under the Australian, Williams has the potential to become a top player.

If Spurs can pull off a move for the Spain international, it could become a big problem for opposition teams in England’s top flight.
