Tottenham: King blown away by Guglielmo Vicario after what he did in defeat v Fulham

Ex-Spurs scout Bryan King believes Tottenham would have conceded “five or six” against Fulham if not for goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

Ange Postecoglou’s side missed the chance to move above Aston Villa and into the Premier League top four as they were beaten 3-0 at Craven Cottage on Saturday (16 March).

It was perhaps Spurs’ most disappointing result of the season as they failed to build on what was their biggest win of the season the week before when they put four past Aston Villa without response at Villa Park (10 March).

However, despite conceding three times, King was impressed by Vicario’s performance.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, King said: “You would have to say Vicario was Spurs’ Man of the Match.

“His handling was good, he was cutting out crosses low and high. He coped well with shots from distance and made a couple of blocks on the near post.

“He had no chance with any of the goals either.

“It could have been far worse if not for Vicario, Fulham could have scored five or six. He was the only one who looked anywhere near the kind of form which I was expecting.”

Guglielmo Vicario has saved Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou one too many times this season

While Vicario’s incredible form during his debut season in North London is of course a positive thing from Spurs’ point of view, it does perhaps point to bigger issues.

Vicario has been called into action for Spurs on far too many occasions this season, and although he has more often than not been up to the task, the defeat to Fulham was a reminder that Tottenham cannot continuously rely on their goalkeeper.

Having a safe pair of hands between the sticks is reassuring for Spurs’ backline, but they must do more to ensure that his job is a little bit easier.

Vicario’s defenders definitely didn’t do enough against Fulham, and after all, there are only so many saves the Italian can produce.
