Tottenham: Jude Soonsup-Bell update in January transfer window delights BBC Sport pundit
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium…
A loan move to the Championship for Jude Soonsup-Bell is a “much better” next step than an introduction to the first team at this stage, according to Paul Robinson.
Fabrizio Romano reported on 2 January that the 20-year-old former Chelsea youngster could be on the move to second or third tier during the winter transfer window after impressing in front of goal.
And despite Ange Postecoglou being without Son Heung-min at the Asian Cup currently, BBC Sport pundit Robinson is a major advocate of young players dropping down the divisions for their first senior action.
Injuries have regularly deprived Postecoglou of first-team players this term but in the absence of Son, the manager has seen Richarlison step up to produce his best run of form with the club.
So if Soonsup-Bell has extensive interest in other divisions he is likely to get more first-team playing time to aid his development elsewhere than at Spurs.
Robinson exclusively told Tottenham News: “I think a loan move to the Championship is much better. The Championship is used very well by the Premier League clubs for their younger players.
“The Under-21s sometimes create a false environment for younger footballers who think they’ve made it into first-team football or Premier League football without actually training with the first team.

“It’s difficult at that age to go and play in the Championship or League One where there’s crowds of people.
“I’m not saying the Under-21s doesn’t matter but it’s not scrutinised, there’s not tens of thousands of people watching you.
“The Championship or League One, it matters. It’s competitive football, more so than the Under-21s, and I think it’s a fantastic grounding for youngsters to go out on loan, utilise that market, and play in the lower leagues.”
