Tottenham issues among players mooted after ‘surprising’ Brennan Johnson incident

Ange Postecoglou will need his players focused if he is to save his job at Tottenham, although it appears there might be some issues within the squad.

Postecoglou is likely to be sacked by Daniel Levy if Tottenham fail to win the UEFA Europa League.

Therefore, despite the 3-1 Premier League victory against Southampton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday (6 April), the Australian will still be feeling the pressure in North London.

As a result, he will need all of his players on the same page to ensure Spurs have any chance of lifting the Europa League in May. However, it seems as though some cracks could be emerging within the squad.

Brennan Johnson involved in ‘surprising’ incident v Southampton

Brennan Johnson inspired Tottenham to victory against Southampton on Sunday.

The Welshman scored twice to take his Premier League tally to 11 for the season. However, it wasn’t all smiles for the winger after one incident toward the end of the match.

With seconds left on the clock, Johnson won a penalty which he asked to take to complete his hattrick. However, Mathys Tel took the spot-kick instead, which is unlikely to have pleased Johnson.

Therefore, ex-Spurs scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes there could be some issues among the players behind the scenes.

“I’m disappointed that Johnson wasn’t allowed to take the penalty,” King said.

“As a player, you’re not going to get that many opportunities in a game to score a hattrick. Therefore, it is surprising that he wasn’t allowed to take the penalty.

“However, it was obviously planned that Tel would be the one to take the penalty. Still, I would’ve given it to Johnson. He had a decent game, his finishing was good, so why he wasn’t allowed to take the penalty I’m not sure.

“Incidents like this just suggest that things are not right among the Tottenham players.”

Johnson and Tel must put any differences aside at Tottenham

Tel’s goal against Southampton was his first in the Premier League. Therefore, the Frenchman and some supporters might feel as though the 19-year-old had just as important a reason to take the penalty as Johnson did.

However, whatever the opinions on the situation are, Tel and Johnson must move on from this, as must the rest of the Spurs squad, ahead of the first leg of their last-eight Europa League tie against Eintracht Frankfurt at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadim on Thursday (10 April).
