Tottenham ‘in substantial Angel Gomes transfer talks’ after Lille exit news

Tottenham have learned what it will take to sign Lille midfielder Angel Gomes after a recent exit development.

All of Spurs’ focus will be on the UEFA Europa League final against Manchester United at the Estadio de San Mamés on Wednesday (21 May).

Tottenham don’t yet know if they will have UEFA Champions League football to offer next season, or if Ange Postecoglou will remain in North London.

However, this hasn’t stopped the Lilywhites from making some preparations ahead of the summer, as they now look to secure Gomes’ signature amid competition from elsewhere.

Gomes confirms he will leave Lille this summer

In a post to his personal Instagram account on Monday (19 May), Gomes, who is out of contract at the end of the season, revealed he would be leaving Lille this summer.

Among the many comments was Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke, who sent the midfielder a message.

Tottenham have long been linked with a move for Gomes, and as reported by The Sunday Mirror (18 May, page 68), the Lilywhites remain keen on the England international, although West Ham have already made an offer.

However, with the 24-year-old set to join his next club as a free agent, ex-Spurs scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes Gomes’ agents will have some big demands.

“This is a high-profile player,” King said.

“If he is going to come to Tottenham on a free transfer, his agent will be telling Spurs, ‘Well this kind of player would usually cost you £35million, and you don’t have to pay that, so let’s be looking at a substantial signing-on fee, and a substantial contract.

“However, I don’t think anything will happen until we know who the manager is going to be next season. There is no point bringing in a player who the manager doesn’t want.

“Therefore, Spurs need to first figure out if Postecoglou is staying, or if a new manager is coming in, to figure out if Gomes fits into the plans.”

Tottenham must wait to make transfer decisions

Until Tottenham know who their manager will be next season, and whether or not they are playing in the Champions League, the North London club cannot make any transfer decisions.

Therefore, despite Gomes already announcing he would leave Lille, the Manchester United academy graduate will need to wait a bit longer if he wants to join Tottenham.
