Tottenham ‘hundreds of millions’ transfer verdict emerges ahead of summer transfer window
Tottenham will not spend “hundreds of millions” in the transfer window as Chelsea and Manchester City have done in the past, says Alan Hutton.
Spurs have enjoyed a good first campaign under Ange Postecoglou and are right in the fight to qualify for Champions League football via their Premier League standing.
There have been some bumps in the road, including the poor 3-0 loss at Fulham (16 March) prior to the international break and there will no doubt be a desire to improve the squad and, hopefully, consistency of results by delving into the transfer window.
Former Spurs defender Hutton, speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, says the level of spending will depend on how they see their ambitions for next season but says regardless they will not spend extortionate amounts of money.
“It really comes down to what your ambitions are for the club. Are you talking about going on to win the league? Or are you talking about happy being fourth and being a Champions League team?” He said.
“Even that, if you get into the Champions League some of the teams you come up against are you going to struggle against those?
“I think it really comes down to where the club see themselves. I don’t think they’re ever going to go out and spend hundreds and hundreds of millions because they’ve never really been that way.
“Yes, they’ve obviously put a lot of money into the playing squad, but I’m talking about the way Chelsea do it, Manchester City do it, these kind of teams, I don’t think they’re ever going to do that.
“So it’ll be interesting to see what they do come the summer, I think you can never stand still, you always have to look at options and making your squad better and Ange will do that but I don’t see them spending hundreds of millions do it.”
Will Tottenham go big in the summer transfer window?
A lot of Tottenham’s transfer plans, you would imagine, will centre of whether they manage to get over the line in the race for Champions League qualification.
Last summer, Spurs were able to spend decent amounts of cash on the likes of Guglielmo Vicario, Micky van de Ven, James Maddison and Brennan Johnson but that was helped by the £100million sale of Harry Kane.

So, this time around it might be that some players have to be sold to make room for others to arrive and to ensure they keep money coming in what with so many teams wary of Profit and Sustainability rules.
Either way, it has to be said that Hutton is right, there won’t be the sort of extravagant spending associated with other clubs.
In other Tottenham news, one forward has been tipped to quit the club this summer.
