Tottenham have decision to make on future of Under-21 gem Matthew Craig – Spurs Expert

Tottenham must decide on where midfielder Matthew Craig’s future lies with his contract in North London set to expire in 2026, according to John Wenham.

Craig joined up with EFL League Two side Doncaster Rovers on loan until the end of the season (Tottenham Hotspur Official Website, 9 January).

It is the 20-year-old’s first taste of senior football since emerging through the youth ranks at Hotspur Way, having made just one competitive appearance so far for Tottenham.

He has been a regular since joining Doncaster and Wenham believes that Spurs must allow Craig to continue progressing.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “Craig is doing well at Doncaster, he has been playing regularly as of late and recently scored his first goal for the club.

“I think next year Spurs need to be looking to move him up another level or even send him out on loan to the Championship.

“He’s got a contract with Tottenham until 2026 and the club need to decide what they are going to do with him.

“Overall, I’m really pleased with how his loan is going at the moment. He is playing a lot of football and that will only increase his value.”

Does Matthew Craig have a future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium?

Ange Postecoglou should at least take a closer look at Craig in pre-season ahead of the 2024/25 campaign getting underway.

Craig has been a key player for the club’s Under-21s over the years, captaining the side on multiple occasions, and has so far proven that he deserves a fair opportunity at breaking into the first team.

Other talented players within the academy must see that there is a pathway available to make a name for themselves at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

With some experience of senior football under his belt, Craig deserves an opportunity to demonstrate the progress he has made while out on loan.
