Tottenham: Giovani Lo Celso to consider summer transfer as Spurs unhappiness speculated

Tottenham midfielder Giovani Lo Celso will already be “assessing his options” ahead of the summer transfer window, according to Alan Hutton.

The Argentine midfielder has been a bit part player under Ange Postecoglou so far this season, only starting four games in the Premier League despite picking up two goals and two assists in his 443 minutes of action.

Reports have emerged suggesting that the 27-year-old is unhappy with his lack of regular action in North London and would be open to leaving Spurs this summer in search of consistent first-team football elsewhere [Football Insider, 1 April].

While Hutton admits he expected Lo Celso to leave Tottenham a while ago, he thinks it would be best for all parties if the midfielder left this summer, as long as somebody matches Spurs and Daniel Levy’s valuation.

“I expected him to go a while ago, to be honest with you,” Hutton told Tottenham News.

“He’s been out on loan, I think he did quite well and then he’s been brought back in. He’s had game time, but surely he wasn’t happy with the limited time he had before? If it’s not worked again, surely you’d have to be assessing your options moving forward, that’s how I would think.

“Every footballer wants to play every single minute and that will never change so if you’re only playing once or twice for every 10 or 15 minutes every couple of weeks, that’s not what you want.

“He needs to start assessing his options and come the summer it’s going to probably be the same, it will come down to money. Will they get the money in that they value him worth? He’s not played a lot of football, but I think they should look to the future.”

Will Giovani Lo Celso leave Tottenham in the summer transfer window?

It has been clear for some time that Lo Celso isn’t a key part of Postecoglou’s plans at Spurs, but the 27-year-old has shown in his limited appearances this season that he can still be a difference-maker in the Premier League.

The good form of James Maddison has made it very hard for any attacking midfielder to break into the Spurs starting XI this term, but Lo Celso is now at a stage of his career where he will want to be playing week in and week out.

It seems unlikely Postecoglou will be going anywhere this summer and the Australian is keen to add to his midfield options when the transfer window opens, so it would be best for everyone if an exit can be completed quickly after the end of the season.
