Tottenham frustration as Alejo Veliz dubbed ‘failure’ by Spanish press after what happened at Sevilla

John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose has detailed his “frustration” after what was said about Tottenham forward Alejo Veliz.

Veliz joined Tottenham from Rosario Central last summer, with the North London side paying £13million to bring the forward to the Premier League (via BBC Sport, 8 August).

Spurs decided to send Veliz on loan to Sevilla in January, (Tottenham Hotspur Official Website, 1 February), but the 20-year-old has so far struggled to make an impact in Spain.

According to ABC Sevilla (via Sport Witness, 14 March), Sevilla manager Quique Sanchez Flores doesn’t care one bit about Veliz, with the forward being limited to a “testimonial” role in La Liga.

And Diario De Sevilla (18 March) have gone one step further, labelling the signing of Veliz a “failure” after the Spurs man missed out entirely on Sevilla’s matchday squad for their most recent La Liga clash, a 2-1 home defeat to Celta Vigo (17 March)

With Veliz struggling in Spain, Wenham has expressed his frustration at the way the situation has been handled.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham, the founder of reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose, said: “It’s quite frustrating because I am sure there are teams in England, perhaps in the Championship, who would have taken a chance on Veliz.

“That way he’d be acclimatised to English football where we need to see if he can play.

“I still think his loan with Sevilla is a good experience, but obviously, there will be a sense of frustration from Tottenham and the player himself that he is hardly playing.”

Tottenham should consider recalling Alejo Veliz from his loan with Sevilla

If Spurs have the opportunity to bring the Argentinian back to Hotspur Way, this is definitely something that they should consider doing.

If Sevilla’s manager has no interest in helping with Veliz’s development, then the youngster would be better off playing with Spurs’ Under-21s or coming on for the final minutes of Premier League matches.

Veliz is clearly being wasted in Spain, and considering the fee that Tottenham paid to bring him to England, the club will want to ensure that they handle his situation more efficiently next season.
