Tottenham fans to back Timo Werner deal as Sky Sports share £4.3m January transfer update on Tuesday
We’re delighted to welcome former Scotland right-back Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium…
Tottenham fans will get behind Timo Werner once he’s their player despite a previous allegiance to Chelsea, according to Alan Hutton.
Werner, 27, left Stamford Bridge after a dismal two years in 2022 to return to RB Leipzig. However, the Germany forward’s second spell at Leipzig hasn’t exactly gone to plan and now he looks set to be on the move again.
Sky Sports reported on Tuesday morning (9 January) that Werner is “on the brink” of signing for Spurs on loan. It was reported that the attacker will jet into London in the coming days with Tottenham agreeing to pay his entire wages, amounting to £4.3million, as well as an option-to-buy clause.

Werner’s not enjoyed the greatest of spells in his career lately but Hutton believes Spurs fans will give the German a lot of support during his spell in North London, even if he was once a Blue.
“Tottenham fans will be open to it,” Hutton told Tottenham News. “I don’t think they’ll say, ‘that’s not the guy for us’. They’re not like that, they’ll get behind Werner and will want him to play well.
“Look at Richarlison when he came in, there were high expectations but he didn’t quite hit those heights. He scored a couple but still, they back him. You even saw it the other day when he missed a lot of opportunities.
“Werner is in that category as well. You want him to do well, you don’t want to put too much pressure on him.
“If the fans get behind him, he scores an early goal, that could be a trigger for him and hopefully, he can do that.”

Werner has only started two Bundesliga games for Leipzig this season with his last league appearance for them coming on 4 November due to an injury issue as well as a few games where he was left as an unused substitute.
Overall, he’s netted just twice in 14 appearances this term for Leipzig and during his time at Stamford Bridge, he scored 10 goals in 56 Premier League appearances.
