Tottenham Expert reacts to £80million Pedro Neto update amid Wolves transfer rumours

Tottenham might want to avoid signing Wolves forward Pedro Neto, according to John Wenham.

As per The Independent (29 February), the Portuguese winger has emerged as one of Spurs’ two main targets in the wide areas ahead of the summer transfer window, with Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze as the other.

Neto has been in fine form for Gary O’Neil’s side this season, scoring twice and providing nine assists in 17 Premier League outings.

As a result, plenty of teams in the Premier League are monitoring his situation, with the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City all interested, although David Ornstein recently revealed in his Q&A via The Athletic (22 February) that it would take a fee of £80million to prize Neto away from Molineux.

In light of this news, Wenham has questioned whether the 23-year-old would be worth the fee.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “With Neto, I know that he stands out every time Wolves play, and he is a very good player, but I believe that he is more suited to a counter-attacking team.

“For the first time in five years, we’re no longer a counter-attacking team, we’re a possession-based team and we bring the game to our opponents, rather than relying on pace to hit teams on the break.

“Therefore, I just wonder how suited Neto is to Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou, and I think that is something Spurs need to consider when moving forward.”

Will Pedro Neto end up at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer?

There is no doubt that Neto is a talented player who would have plenty to offer in North London.

He demonstrated that himself as he grabbed an impressive assist in Wolves’ 2-1 win away at Tottenham on Saturday 17 February.

However, Wenham’s concerns over his suitability for Spurs are valid and £80million is a lot of money to fork out on a player who is unproven in Postecoglou’s system.

In addition, the forward’s injury record would also likely put teams off paying that kind of money.

Neto is under contract at Wolves until 2027 which puts his current side in a strong position when it comes to any potential negotiations.

As a result, Spurs might be better off looking elsewhere this summer and finding a more suitable deal.
