Tottenham Expert moots trouble in January after ‘phenomenal body blow’ confirmed

Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…

John Wenham believes Cristian Romero’s latest injury is a “phenomenal body blow” which could threaten to derail the club’s form over the next few weeks.

Ange Postecoglou confirmed in his pre-match press conference ahead of Spurs’ Premier League clash with Brighton on Thursday 28 December that Romero will join the likes of Micky van de Ven, James Maddison and Rodrigo Bentancur on the club’s list of injured stars.

In quotes shared by Fabrizio Romano via his official X platform (27 December), Postecoglou told the media, “Romero had a scan and he’s got a hamstring strain. We’re looking at four to five weeks with him.”

With this in mind, Wenham believes it will be incredibly difficult for the club to keep up their recent form in which they have won three consecutive league games.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “To lose Romero on top of the players we’re already missing in January is just a phenomenal body blow.

“We’ve now lost our two, in my opinion, world-class centre-backs (Romero and van de Ven).

“This season feels like a social experiment as to how much mental damage a club’s supporters can take.

“How much longer can this keep happening to us? In a season where we’re only playing league games, it is remarkable the number of injuries we’re suffering week after week

“We have just had to keep carrying on, keep churning out results and we’ve done remarkably well to keep ourselves in the top-four picture.

“I was looking at these fixtures coming up with a positive feeling.

“However, suddenly once again, we are looking at a completely makeshift back four, an army of players who are backups to begin with playing in unnatural positions, and it’s just asking so much of us to keep this positive momentum going.”

In other Tottenham news, Postecoglou will sleep easier with one 99% ace in line to return against Manchester United next month.
