Tottenham expert moots promotion for Under-18 defender Archie Chaplin after his ‘impressive form’ this season

Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…

John Wenham believes Tottenham Under-18s star Archie Chaplin will be promoted to play alongside the Under-21s for the remainder of the season.

Chaplin has made 12 appearances for the Under-18s this season, starting 11 of the club’s Under-18 Premier League South matches and their one FA Youth Cup tie.

The centre-back has impressed at Hotspur Way this season and could now be called up to feature for Spurs’ Under-21s.

Waye Burnett’s side are flying high, sitting top of Premier League 2 with a 100 per cent record, but have lost some key players on loan this month, and Wenham believes 18-year-old Chaplin could be one of the players to step up and fill a gap.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “After January, we will see a different Under-21s line-up for the rest of the season.

“Josh Keeley was the first-choice goalkeeper, he has now gone out on loan to National League side Barnet, so Luca Gunter will step in and become number one.

“In the heart of defence, Ashley Phillips has also gone out on loan. He made five appearances this season for the Under-21s, so he will need replacing too.

“There are other players that can cover that position, the likes of Brooklyn Lyons-Foster and Charlie Sayers who both have six months left on their contracts.

“But I think we will probably see young Archie Chaplin move up from the Under-18s and come and play with the Under-21s, which will be a good reward for him after his impressive form this season.”

In other Tottenham news, Real Madrid and FC Barcelona are eyeing up a move for one of Spurs’ in-form stars.
