Tottenham Expert confident Brentford striker Ivan Toney will be ‘pocketed’ on Wednesday

Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…

John Wenham finds the talk around Ivan Toney’s return for Brentford “boring” and believes that the Tottenham defence will have no trouble handling the striker.

Spurs and Brentford will meet at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday 31 January for a midweek Premier League clash.

Ange Postecoglou’s side will be seeking a return to winning ways after they were beaten 1-0 by Manchester City on Friday 26 January, which saw them dumped out of the FA Cup in the process.

Meanwhile, Brentford will be looking to make it back-to-back league victories after Toney’s goalscoring return for the club in their 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday 20 January.

The 27-year-old made his comeback following an eight-month ban from football after he accepted 232 breaches of the FA’s rules on betting last year (The Guardian, 17 May 2023).

His return has received plenty of media coverage, and Wenham has insisted he is not interested in the slightest.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “I expect that we will have too much for Brentford.

“All of this hype around Toney’s return, I find it quite boring honestly. I don’t expect him to cause us many problems, and I can just see him being pocketed by Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero.

“Those two are just a complete level above the striker.

“I’m not interested in Toney getting this borderline hero’s welcome back to football. He was banned for breaking multiple rules, all this fuss is not for me.”

In other Tottenham news, Wenham believes the club must cut ties with one £25million Spurs man.
