Tottenham Expert: ‘Brilliance’ of Guglielmo Vicario is crucial for Ange Postecoglou
Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…
John Wenham believes Tottenham wouldn’t be where they are in the Premier League this season if not for the “brilliance” of goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.
Spurs won their third consecutive Premier League match last time out, beating an in-form Everton side 2-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday 23 December.
However, it was by no means a dominant performance, with Vicario largely to thank for the three points as the shot-stopper made seven saves and was successful with 100 per cent of his runouts (Sofascore).

Looking back on that performance, Wenham believes Ange Postecoglou’s side were incredibly fortunate, and owe a lot this season to the contributions of their number one, who replaced the long-serving Hugo Lloris between the sticks.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “I thought that was a real injustice of a result. Everton can count themselves very unlucky that they didn’t leave with anything that day.
“We started well, but from about 30 minutes onwards, they were completely on top of us.
“We were very lucky to win that game, but you get those games and you have got to be able to grind out the results, so it’s a credit to the boys for doing that.

“Once again, we found ourselves relying on the brilliance of Vicario toward the end of the match, and I often look at these games now and think where would we be if we were playing this style of football with Hugo Lloris?
“We certainly wouldn’t be grinding out these narrow wins against the likes of Everton and certainly Liverpool as well when I think back to that game.”
In other Tottenham news, Wenham has detailed a “phenomenal body blow” for the club which threatens to derail their recent progress.
