Tottenham Expert: Alfie Devine ready for Championship loan after ‘phenomenal’ time with Port Vale

Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…

John Wenham has described Alfie Devine’s loan move to Plymouth Argyle as “really exciting” and believes the player is ready for the step up after his “phenomenal” time with Port Vale in EFL League One.

Tottenham announced via their official X page on Wednesday morning (17 January) that Devine had been recalled from his loan spell with Port Vale.

It was later announced that the midfielder had joined up with Championship side Plymouth Argyle for the remainder of the season (Spurs’ Official X, 17 January), where he will play alongside his Tottenham teammate Ashley Phillips, who is also on loan with the club.

John Wenham broke the news first via his official X account, Lilywhite Rose (17 January), and has detailed just how big of a move this is for Devine.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “This move follows the real success he had during the first half of the season on loan with Port Vale, where he made 26 appearances in total, which is a really phenomenal achievement for his personal development.

He scored three goals, made three assists, and got the EFL Player of the Round in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup as well.

“He had a really good loan there, and I know that the club and supporters liked him, he was getting a lot of time on the ball in central midfield and he was playing in the deep-lying creative midfield role.

“When he first went to League One, I thought that he was probably ready for a Championship loan at that point, but I completely understand why Tottenham have done it this way.

“It allowed him to get some exposure to senior men’s football at a lower level where he stood out and was a star.

“This is a really exciting move, it will see him link up with Ian Foster who managed him at the England age group levels, so he will already have the trust of the manager. I don’t think Tottenham would have agreed to this move had there not been the guarantee of game time.

“We will see how the moves goes from now until the end of the season. I wouldn’t be averse to him going there for six months and then staying there for another year, or if it goes well then looking at a potential loan to a Premier League side, such as a newly-promoted side next season.

“I have always thought that Devine would make it at Tottenham, and I think this news is just fantastic for that viewpoint.”

In other Tottenham news, one Sky Sports pundit believes the club should once again be looking to raid Nottingham Forest.
