Tottenham door open to complete ‘perfect’ Conor Gallagher transfer after Chelsea news

The door might be open for Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou to secure a deal for Conor Gallagher after a new contract update at Chelsea, according to Alan Hutton.

Spurs are reportedly long-time admirers of the England international and are understood to remain keen on securing his services when the transfer window opens at the end of the Premier League season [GiveMeSport, 18 February].

Gallagher’s current contract at Stamford Bridge is set to expire at the end of the 2024/25 campaign and despite Mauricio Pochettino’s desire to keep the 24-year-old, no progress has yet been made to extend the midfielder’s deal [Daily Mail, 30 April].

While Hutton believes the lack of progression may allow Spurs to secure his signature, he does admit that he has been left “baffled” that the people in charge at Chelsea are willing to let such a key player leave.

“I would like to think so (that the door may be open) from Spurs’ point of view,” Hutton told Tottenham News.

“I think Conor Gallagher has had an outstanding season. He’s the Chelsea captain at this moment in time and you see his goal against Villa and that shows what he’s capable of.

He gives you energy in abundance, which is something Ange Postecoglou likes in his players. He brings something else to that starting XI.

Again I’m baffled by the fact Chelsea want to get rid of him. I understand from the FFP perspective with how much they’ve spent and everything that goes along with it. But to lose a player like that to a rival is not ideal.

“However, from a Tottenham point of view, it would be the perfect signing.”

Will Tottenham sign Conor Gallagher as Chelsea contract talks stall ahead of the transfer window?

While Gallagher isn’t the perfect midfielder, he does possess plenty of attributes that make him the ideal fit to play regularly in a Postecoglou side, most notably his incredible energy and workrate on and off of the ball.

Typically, this sort of deal would have stalled before it had even begun as the Blues don’t tend to sell players to their London rivals, but Gallagher’s contract situation may just provide the perfect opening for Spurs to swoop in.

Now that Tottenham appear set to miss out on a place in the Champions League and after James Maddison’s recent dip in form, the signing of Gallagher may be exactly what Spurs need to get some supporters back onside.

Until the midfielder signs on the dotted line at Stamford Bridge, this speculation won’t be going anywhere.
