Tottenham: Djed Spence finished as Spurs ready to ‘cut their losses’ after March development

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy and manager Ange Postecoglou may be set to “cut their losses” and sell Djed Spence during the summer transfer window, according to Alan Hutton.

Having been sent back from his loan spell with Leeds United in the January transfer window, Spence joined the ranks at Genoa for the second half of the season, where he has played six times in Serie A without scoring or assisting.

In an interview with The Athletic (8 March), the 23-year-old claimed that he has not had any contact with anyone from Spurs since arriving in Italy, despite still holding operations of breaking into Ange Postecoglou’s first team squad in the future.

While Hutton refuses to believe that Tottenham will have not been watching the right-back, he admits Spence faces a make-or-break summer in North London given the previous questions about his attitude.

“It will be through his agent that he’ll hear most things,” Hutton told Tottenham News.

“Of course, they will be watching him, you don’t get sent out on loan and it’s like ‘Right off you go, we don’t care what’s happening here.’ They will be looking at him and seeing what’s going on.

“It’s just not worked out and it just doesn’t seem to be fitting and I thought personally, with his attributes, he fits well into what Tottenham are trying to do. Whether they feel his attitude is not quite right, we’ve seen that he’s been sent home from loans before because of it.

“Is that an issue, is that something that they’re going to have to look at? Or are they just going to cut their losses now? It’s really down to him, he needs to just concentrate on what he’s doing, don’t worry about whether your parent club are watching you or not.

“Just go and control what you can do and then take it from there, but any dialogue will be through his agent.”

Will Djed Spence play for Tottenham again after Leeds United and Genoa loans?

Postecoglou may not be blessed with much defensive depth in North London currently, but it is clear that when fit Pedro Porro is the Australian’s first-choice right-back and that is unlikely to change anytime soon given his recent displays.

The door isn’t closed for Spence at Spurs, however, he has done little with Leeds or Genoa to suggest that he is deserving of another opportunity in the Premier League, especially if his attitude has let him down at previous clubs.

With pre-season just around the corner, the 23-year-old will almost certainly be given another chance to prove himself, but something will have to change quickly if he wants to be starting week in and week out for Tottenham.
