Tottenham disappointment emerges after ‘depressing’ Djed Spence development
Djed Spence has finally suffered a setback after a fantastic few months for Tottenham.
Spence started the season on the outskirts of Ange Postecoglou’s squad.
However, he has since established himself as a first-choice option at fullback, starting ahead of Destiny Udogie in Spurs’ 3-1 win over AZ Alkmaar at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Thursday (13 March).
It is no more than the Englishman deserves after his fantastic form in recent months.
However, Spence has finally suffered a setback, and the 24-year-old must now respond in the right way.

Thomas Tuchel makes baffling Spence decision
England boss Thomas Tuchel has called up Dominic Solanke to his first Three Lions squad.
However, there was no room for Spence, much to the disappointment of Spurs supporters, and Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – claims he was left feeling depressed after discovering who had got the nod ahead of Spence.
“This is incredibly disappointing because Spence can play on both sides,” Wenham said.
“He has been Spurs’ man of the match in most of our recent games and Tuchel has instead opted to pick 32-year-old Dan Burn, which I just find depressing if I’m honest.
England defenders | Club |
Dan Burn | Newcastle United |
Lewis Colwill | Chelsea |
Marc Guéhi | Crystal Palace |
Reece James | Chelsea |
Ezri Konsa | Aston Villa |
Myles Lewis-Skelly | Arsenal |
Tino Livramento | Newcastle United |
Jarell Quansah | Liverpool |
Kyle Walker | AC Milan |
“Jordan Henderson is back in the squad too, which I find strange. I understand some managers look for experience. However, I still think Henderson and Burns’ call-ups are odd, and it means James Maddison and Spence have both missed out.
“Even the likes of Morgan Gibbs-White, his omission doesn’t make any sense either.”
Spence must prove Tuchel wrong
Spence will no doubt feel as though he did enough to earn his first ever senior England call-up.
However, for whatever reason, Tuchel clearly doesn’t agree. Therefore, all the Spurs star can do now is get his head down and work even harder to earn an opportunity in the next squad.
And that can only be a good thing from Tottenham’s perspective as they now have a player on their hands who is in fine form and surely more motivated than ever to prove Tuchel wrong.
