Tottenham defender Ashley Phillips has blown scouts away – Spurs Expert
Tottenham expert John Wenham has compared Ashley Phillips to Chelsea and England defender Levi Colwill after his performances on loan with Plymouth Argyle, which have blown scouts away.
Phillips joined the Championship side on loan for the rest of the season in January (Tottenham Hotspur Official, 8 January).
He has impressed so far, starting seven consecutive games for the club since he arrived in Devon.
His performances are beginning to attract some attention, and Wenham was full of praise for the 18-year-old.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “Phillips is getting rave reviews week in and week out. He has got all the attributes to be a top centre-back, and he is already demonstrating that in the Championship.
“People in scouting roles who have been watching him play are praising him to the moon, so I am really pleased about that.
“I think the next step for Phillips is a Premier League loan next season because he has developed far quicker than I thought he would.
“We could be looking at our very own Levi Colwill, where we have a young defender out on loan excelling in the Premier League.”
Tottenham future looks bright
It has been a long time since Spurs had a young player who has gone out on loan and made so much noise.
Phillips is one of several young players coming through at Hotspur Way, with Alfie Devine also impressing on loan with Plymouth Argyle, while the likes of Alfie Dorrington and Jamie Donley continue to shine for the Under-21s in North London.
Spurs also have a few impressive young players within the first-team squad, with the future suddenly looking very bright in N17.
After such high praise for Phillips, it will be important for those around him to keep him grounded, but if he continues on this trajectory then there is no doubt he can become a top England international.
