Tottenham: Daniel Levy told to sign Ivan Toney amid £60m Sky Sports transfer news

Tottenham have been urged to “go and get” Ivan Toney by Alan Hutton after a new update emerged over the Brentford forward’s future.

Spurs have been linked with a move for the England international ahead of the summer transfer window in North London as Ange Postecoglou looks to strengthen his forward options having lost Harry Kane to Bayern Munich [Give Me Sport, 6 March].

While initial reports suggested it could cost around £100million to pull the 29-year-old away from Brentford this summer, Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth [30 March] has suggested, via GiveMeSport, that the Bees may be willing to accept a fee of around £60million.

While Hutton concedes that is a big transfer fee for Daniel Levy to spend on a single player, he believes Toney would help Spurs move to the next level and also admits he would be a massive upgrade on Richarlison.

“I’d say go and get him,” Hutton told Tottenham News.

“Of course, £60million is a lot but he’s a goalscorer. He does it Brentford week in and week out, he’s got really good stats, he looks like a leader and he’s grown in stature. You can see how confident he is, taking penalties for England is no problem, he’s just a cool, calm customer.

“Him moving in there is only going to push them forward. You think of Harry Kane when he left and how much of a talisman he was.

“Yes, Richarlison has done alright but I don’t think he’s an Ivan Toney, I don’t think he’ll get you the goals he could do. I think that takes Spurs to the next level if he can continue his goalscoring form for the next coming season.

“I think that would be a really good option for Tottenham to look at if they can get him for that price.”

Will Tottenham be in the transfer race for Ivan Toney this summer?

The transfer window is still weeks away, but Spurs have already been linked with a string of different attacking players and it seems clear that Postecoglou and Levy feel they needed a new dimension in the final third.

Toney has shown that he can be a consistent source of goals in the Premier League and consistency is what Spurs lack with both Timo Werner and Richarlison being guilty of blowing hot and cold in front of goal.

Whether Levy will foot the bill required to bring the 29-year-old to North London this summer remains to be seen, but if the Tottenham chairman wants to take his side to the next level, these are the sort of transfer fees he simply has to pay.
