Tottenham cut-price Kyle Walker-Peters deal mooted after Destiny Udogie development

Dan Bardell believes Kyle Walker-Peters could prove to be an excellent piece of business for Tottenham Hotspur as they look to add squad depth ahead of next season.

A report by talkSPORT (9 May) has suggested that Ange Postecoglou could make a move to bring the Englishman back to North London this summer.

Walker-Peters is out of contract at the end of next season and as a result could be available on a cut-price deal, especially if Southampton aren’t promoted.

Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell has suggested he could be a useful option for Spurs next season to cover Destiny Udogie, who was ruled out for the rest of the season in April, and Pedro Porro.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Bardell said: “I’d put that under sensible signings for the summer. Tottenham have fallen down a little but at times when they haven’t had their first choice full backs available.

“Porro and Udogie are so crucial to what Spurs do and the way they build up. If one of them or both are missing then Spurs are an infinitely worse side because the people that cover them can’t do what they can do.

“I think Walker-Peters is an intelligent enough footballer to be able to play either role and do what Udogie and Porro do. Maybe not to the same standard but somewhere near it and that’s what Spurs need.

“The fact that he covers both right and left back is a boost. Walker-Peters will be one of the most sensible signings across the entire Premier League in the summer if Spurs can get that done, I think that makes complete sense.”

Should Tottenham resign Kyle Walker-Peters?

The 27-year-old has played all but two games for Southampton in the Championship this season as they finished in the Play-Off spots.

After a 0-0 draw to West Bromwich Albion in the first leg, there is no guarantee that the Saints will achieve promotion this campaign.

Given that Walker-Peters’ contract is also out in a year, he might be able to move this summer so his club can recoup some of what they paid.

According to FotMob, he scored two and assisted four which is a decent record for a full back but he may have hoped for better.

He registers highly for his ability on the ball which may make him a useful option for Postecoglou next season.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou.

This campaign he has registered 5.83 progressive carries, 1.94 successful take-ons and 75.28 passes with a 75.28 per cent accuracy per 90 [Fbref].

These are all positive characteristics but his defensive output may worry Spurs as they look into him.

He ranks in the bottom 20 per cent of fullbacks in Europe’s top 14 competitions for blocks, clearances and aerial duels.

Walter-Peters could prove to be a useful addition to the squad if the price is right this summer.
