Tottenham could blow all their money on Nico Williams as FFP caution advised for Spurs

Tottenham would have to be wary of staying within Profit and Sustainability limits if they were to make a move for Athletic Bilbao speed ace Nico Williams, Paul Robinson has said.

It was reported by the Daily Mirror (9 March) that Spurs are set for a summer transfer battle with London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea for the 21-year-old.

Williams only signed a new contract with Athletic in December and reportedly takes home over £100,000 after tax but his deal has a £43million release clause.

Former Spurs goalkeeper Robinson – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – thinks Williams is a quality talent but wonders whether there may be an issue staying within PSR limits if they make their move for him.

“Well he’s going to cost a lot of money because Bilbao have tied him to a long contract until 2028/29 I think it is,” he said.

“And the quality of the player that’s why they’ve done it because they know the value that they’ve got with him on that length of contract it gives them so much more bargaining power.

“I think eventually he’ll come to the Premier League whether that’s Tottenham or elsewhere, but you look at that from a Tottenham point of view, you look at Brennan Johnson, you look at Timo Werner, they are looking at bringing that type of player in.

“If they’re looking at that level of player and they’re looking at Williams the only thing is he’s going to be a big transfer fee so where that sits with FFP and you blow all your money on one signing, you wonder where it leaves Tottenham.

“We know Tottenham did their deals early in January. Unusually they went in before everyone else and made two big signings, whether they do that again in the summer or not we don’t know, and we don’t know how tight they are to the FFP lines.

“If you look at every other club it was probably the worst transfer window we ever had because everyone was scared. I mean Newcastle, the richest club in the world, you would expect them to spend a fortune instead they were talking about selling their best three players because they had to fall in line.

“So it’ll be an interesting one and that’s the only thing with Williams is how the deal’s constructed if and when he comes to the Premier League and how it fits with whatever club’s finances.”

Will Tottenham sign Athletic Bilbao ace Nico Williams?

A lot of Tottenham’s transfer business you have to assume will depend on whether they get over the line in their pursuit of Champions League football?

As things stand, Ange Postecoglou’s side sit fifth – which itself might be good enough to earn a spot at the top table of European football next season.

Tottenham, Nico Williams

If they do get Champions League football then Williams is exactly the calibre of player they should be targeting to boost their squad for continental competition.

Like every other club, Tottenham will have to monitor the PSR limits but the excellent job they are doing commercially means they should be in a reasonably strong position to do business.
