Tottenham: Contact already made over permanent Timo Werner transfer ahead of summer switch

Tottenham will have already been in contact with RB Leipzig over potentially making Timo Werner’s stay in North London permanent in the summer, according to Alan Hutton.

The German international scored his first goal in a Spurs shirt following his January loan from the Bundesliga as Ange Postecoglou’s side claimed all three points with a 3-1 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday (2 March).

Werner has impressed in flashes since arriving in North London in January and should he continue to thrive in Postecoglou’s system, Spurs are reportedly able to buy him permanently for a fee of around £15million at the end of the season [Sky Sports, 10 January].

While Hutton remains unconvinced by the 27-year-old’s ability in the final third, he does believe that Tottenham will be in constant contact with Leipzig over the next few months to continually monitor Werner’s long-term future.

“I think they will have always been in contact about it,” Hutton told Tottenham News.

“I don’t think that will change between now and the end of the season, they will always be monitoring that situation. It always goes back to the same thing for me, he needs more than one opportunity to score a goal.

“You see Eze, fantastic free-kick but before that Werner has a great opportunity one-on-one with the goalkeeper and he shows amazing speed and that’s what he’s all about getting into position.

“Sometimes I just think when he has too long to think about it, I never feel confident that he’ll score. If that was Son, I’d put him down to score.

“But he got his goal and he’s off the mark. Well done, it’s good for him and good for the club, but I think they’ll be monitoring the situation from now until the end of the season to see if he’s a guy that can fit in long-term or not. Then they’ll have to make the decision.”

Will Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou sign Timo Werner permanently this summer?

Werner earned plenty of praise for his performance against Crystal Palace as he showed that he can be a goal threat in the Premier League, even if he has been slightly erratic during his spell with Spurs and previously with Chelsea.

Postecoglou already has a number of excellent attacking options in his squad, but the 27-year-old has shown that he can offer something different to the likes of Son Heung-min and Richarlison with his lightening quick pace.

Whether or not Postecoglou and Daniel Levy will make his stay permanent remains to be seen, but Werner may give them no choice if he continues to flourish in a Spurs shirt.
