Tottenham confusion emerges after ‘strange’ Son Heung-min incident v Man City

Son Heung-min has caused confusion with his actions after Spurs’ 1-0 defeat to Manchester City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

City prevented Ange Postecoglou’s side from winning four Premier League games on the bounce on Wednesday (26 February).

Erling Haaland scored the only goal of the game, with Kevin Danso arguably at fault. However, the Norwegian will feel aggrieved that he didn’t leave North London with another goal on his already impressive Premier League tally.

The 24-year-old put the ball in the back of the net for a second time in the closing stages of the match. However, Haaland’s goal was ruled out for handball in rather controversial fashion.

Despite this, for some reason it was the Spurs players who were left complaining at full-time.

Son complains to Jarred Gillett after Tottenham defeat v Man City

In footage shared by TNT Sports via X (26 February), Son and several Spurs players could be seen complaining to referee Jarred Gillett and his assistants after the full time whistle had sounded in North London.

However, it isn’t quite clear what the South Korean was complaining about, as City were the team who were denied a goal in controversial fashion.

Therefore, ex-Spurs scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – was left confused by the rather “strange” incident.

“I’m still trying to work out why Haaland’s second goal was ruled out,” King said.

“If anybody handled it, it was Danso. In fact, a couple of Tottenham defenders appeared to handle it before Haaland eventually put the ball in the back of the net.

Spurs are struggling in the Premier League

“I think the Spurs players might have been complaining about Destiny Udogie being brought down in the box. However, that wasn’t a penalty. Therefore, I’m not quite sure why they were complaining so much. It was Manchester City players who should have been complaining, because the Haaland goal would have sealed things.

“As a result, that was rather strange from Son and the Spurs players. However, perhaps it is just another example of VAR causing confusion.”

Tottenham must shift focus to UEFA Europa League

Losing yet another Premier League game is by no means ideal. However, from Spurs’ point of view, they have very little left to play for in the league this season.

All their focus should instead be on the UEFA Europa League and finally lifting a trophy, which would also offer them a route into next season’s UEFA Champions League.

Therefore, while the players, Son in particular, were frustrated at full-time, they must quickly put it behind them and turn all their focus toward Europe.

Spurs’ next match is the first leg of their Round of 16 clash with AZ Alkmaar, and it is a match which is arguably the most important of their season thus far.
