Tottenham: Chelsea to sell £40m Conor Gallagher as they balance the books

Chelsea may be willing to sell “outstanding” star Conor Gallagher to Tottenham for around £40million this summer in an attempt to balance their books, according to Alan Hutton.

Spurs and Ange Postecoglou have been long-term admirers of the England international and reportedly remain keen on securing the midfielder’s signature when the transfer window opens at the end of the season [GiveMeSport, 18 February].

Reports have suggested Spurs are willing to table a bid worth between £30-£40million this summer [Football Insider, 24 March], with Chelsea unlikely to receive any top dollar offers for Gallagher as the 24-year-old enters the final year of his contract.

While Hutton believes Mauricio Pochettino’s side would likely hold out for a fee closer to £60million, he has urged Spurs to try and get a deal over the line admitting Gallagher would take Postecoglou’s side to the next level.

“I think he could be a real star for Tottenham,” Hutton told Tottenham News.

“I’ve always said, I don’t see why Chelsea would want to sell him, I think he’s been outstanding for them this season. I get that it’s total profit, he’s come through the youth system, maybe they need to balance the books, so from that point of view I do understand.

“It will be an interesting one to see if they can get a deal over the line because they are rivals, I mean Chelsea and Tottenham has been difficult whenever we’ve gone down this scenario before so it will be interesting to see if they can do it.

“I think if you’re talking £30-40million that’s a decent price. I wouldn’t be surprised if they started trying to say £50-60million for a young, English, talented midfielder.

“If you can get him for a little bit cheaper then ideal, I think if he comes in he makes the team stronger.”

Will Chelsea be willing to sell Conor Gallagher to Tottenham in the summer transfer window?

While it would be controversial to see Chelsea sell one of their best players to a rival, Gallagher would certainly add a different dimension and energy to Spurs’ midfield if he does make the switch to North London.

While the likes of James Maddison and Pape Sarr have impressed, they have struggled with their own injury and fitness issues at times. Having another option capable of playing week in and week out would be a boost.

Whether or not this deal will get over the line remains to be seen, but you’d imagine Postecoglou will fancy his chances of securing Gallagher’s signature if the Chelsea star doesn’t agree a new deal at Stamford Bridge.
