Tottenham can use Heung-Min Son leverage with compensation unlikely

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Tottenham...

Dan Plumley has insisted that any Tottenham compensation is unlikely as Heung-Min Son gets ready to jet away for the Asia Cup in January.

Clubs are compensated by FIFA for their players appearing in the World Cup, but the finance expert admitted he couldn’t find anything in the regulations to suggest the same here.

It is said, however, that Spurs could use the popularity of their star man in that area of the world, with a short-term boost potentially on the cards in his absence.

“The honest answer is I’m not sure that is in place,” he exclusively told Tottenham News.

“All the narrative I’ve seen is around the payments linked to the World Cup, we know the metrics of that and how that works, I’ve not seen anything in regards to the Asia Cup.

Actually, when you look at the regulations for that tournament, the prize money in total for the winners is $4million so it’s not a huge amount of money in the context of football, I think it is unlikely that there is a similar thing in place.

The other side of that is can Spurs get any sort of leverage out of it from their perspective during the time of the competition, potentially yes.

They will probably be making references to South Korea’s performance in that tournament during the time, you can leverage that link to some of the games they’ve got.

Unlikely they will see compensation based on what I can find, but there is potential for some leverage, maybe they can look to that in the short-term.”
