Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou to axe Timo Werner against Wolves – Spurs Expert

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou should start Brennan Johnson and axe Timo Werner against Wolves this weekend, according to ex-Spurs scout Bryan King.

Spurs will welcome Gary O’Neil’s side to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday 17 February as they look to make it six Premier League home wins on the bounce.

Following Johnson’s last-gasp-winner against Brighton in a 2-1 victory on Saturday 10 February, Ange Postecoglou’s side are looking to record back-to-back wins for the first time since mid-December.

Tottenham are almost back to full strength following the returns of Son Hueung-min, Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr in the last couple of weeks, and King believes Postecoglou should make some changes this weekend.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, King said: “I would like Johnson to start because I think he has done well, he has been impressive so far for me this season.

“Postecoglou seems to be persisting with Werner, whether or not he is hoping for this big breakthrough I am not sure.

“Son will come in on the left, and I would go for Johnson over Werner on the right. I think Postecoglou might want to utilise Dejan Kulusevski and Johnson, if Johnson starts then when he runs out of steam Kulusevski could be introduced towards the end of the game.”

Tottenham need three points

Spurs find themselves in an incredibly tight race for the top four as they seek to make a return to the UEFA Champions League next season.

Aston Villa and Manchester United are breathing down the North London club’s neck, and Postecoglou and his players will know that they cannot afford to slip up.

Every game is a cup final now, and having been knocked out of both domestic cup competitions, Spurs have 14 games left between now and May to determine how their season finishes.

Johnson will be boosted by his winning goal against Brighton, and a start against Wolves could see him build on this momentum and help the home side toward another big three points.

Meanwhile, Werner had shown moments of quality, but hasn’t provided the desired impact in the final third, and with Son back at Hotspur Way it is difficult to see the 27-year-old being handed many minutes.

In other Tottenham news, Postecoglou will be delighted after an agent shared a “positive” contract update on one first-team Spurs star.
