Tottenham: BBC Sport pundit says Giovani Lo Celso not ‘the answer’ for Spurs

We’re delighted to welcome former Scotland right-back Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium…

Giovani Lo Celso is not “the answer” for Tottenham at the number 10 position despite his goal against Aston Villa, according to Alan Hutton.

Spurs have an issue in attacking midfield after England ace James Maddison was ruled out until January with an ankle injury earlier this month.

Lo Celso earned a start and put Spurs ahead in a match that finished in a 2-1 defeat at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, though the Argentine was deployed a little deeper in Tottenham’s engine room.

BBC Sport pundit Hutton feels Lo Celso has shown glimpses of what he is capable of but remains unsure as to whether he is a viable solution for boss Ange Postecoglou.

“You see it in flashes,” he told Tottenham News.

“I think obviously the way they set up, (Dejan) Kulusevski was more like kind of number 10 with Lo Celso just alongside (Rodrigo) Bentancur.

“There’s no getting away from it, he’s a good player and he can make things happen. I think moving forward I don’t think he’s the answer for Tottenham.

“I think it was a great strike obviously from the corner, flick on from (Ben) Davies, the technique and the ability there, I know it takes a slight deflection but it’s a cracking goal.

“And again, is he another one does he need more game time? I know he’s come in and had cameo roles and stuff but this could be the opportunity for him to come in and show everybody what he’s capable of.”

Tottenham’s loss to Villa was their third straight defeat in the Premier League following a 4-1 reverse to Chelsea and a late surrender to Wolves in a 2-1 setback.

Their dip in form has seen Postecoglou’s side slip to fifth in the table, but still only four points adrift of North London rivals Arsenal, who are top of the standings.

In other Tottenham news, the club must reduce their £30million price tag for one player to secure a January sale.
