Tottenham backed to rival Arsenal for Ollie Watkins amid transfer update

Bryan King has encouraged Tottenham to rival Arsenal for the signature of Aston Villa star Ollie Watkins.

The ex-Spurs scout feels that Watkins would be the type of signing to take either of the North London clubs to the next level.

It comes after The Mirror reported (17 April) that Mikel Arteta’s side have been linked with a move for the Aston Villa striker, as well as Newcastle’s Isak, – who recently tormented Spurs’ Micky van de Ven – and Brentford’s Ivan Toney.

And King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – feels that Spurs need to provide the Gunners with a bit of competition for Watkins’ signature.

“If Arsenal need quality, then those are the players they have got to look at,” King said.

It is the same for Tottenham, I think Tottenham need a centre-forward.

“I would sooner see Son Heung-min playing in a wide position, to be honest, and I can’t see Richarlison or Alejo Veliz replacing him up front.

“I would be seriously looking at Watkins or Toney if I was Arsenal or Tottenham.”

Ollie Watkins would be a game-changer for Ange Postecoglou at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Should Watkins be named Premier League Player of the Season, it would be incredibly difficult to argue against it.

The England international has 19 goals in the Premier League this season, one shy of Erling Haaland and Cole Palmer who sit joint-top of the standings with 20 strikes to their name.

However, Watkins also has 10 assists, level at the top of those standings alongside Kieran Trippier and Pascal Gross.

Aston Villa, Ollie Watkins
Tottenham have been urged to sign Ollie Watkins.

He has been superb, and at the age of 28, he is arguably in the prime of his career.

If Ange Postecoglou could lure him to the lily-white side of North London, it would be a real statement signing for Tottenham.
