Tottenham: Ange Postecoglou ‘looking’ at Archie Gray as Leeds United transfer update emerges
Tottenham will “always be looking” at a potential move for “excellent” Leeds United gem Archie Gray ahead of the summer transfer window, according to Alan Hutton.
The 18-year-old has enjoyed an excellent breakthrough season at Elland Road under the management of Daniel Farke, making 41 appearances in the Championship and scoring once as the Whites sit third in the table.
Reports have suggested that Ange Postecoglou’s side will join the transfer race with Liverpool to secure the teenager’s signature this summer, with several of Europe’s biggest sides being linked with the young midfielder [Football League World, 2 April].
While Hutton thinks Spurs will be considering Gray as they plan for the summer transfer window, he admits that he thinks it would be better for all parties if the teenager spent another campaign at Elland Road.
“I think they will always be looking,” Hutton told Tottenham News.
“No team is going to stand still, but I think you just need to look at the likes of Djed Spence, those kinds of guys who left really early when they were looking really positive. Jack Clarke, the winger, came to Tottenham when he was very young and it didn’t quite work out.
“I think he is doing extremely well where he is at Leeds and there’s an opportunity for Leeds to go up into the Premier League, can he kick on with that team?
“He’s so young and you’ve got so much time so there’s no need to jump to a bigger team at this moment in time when you think he may not play.
“I know he’s versatile and can play a number of positions which is excellent nowadays but I just think where you are, feeling comfortable and doing really well, maybe that is a better thing.
“If he keeps progressing the way that he is, of course, teams will be looking at him.”
Tottenham tipped to join Liverpool in transfer race for Leeds United gem Archie Gray
While Spurs won’t want to miss out on potentially the next Jude Bellingham, they have repeatedly rushed into deals for Championship players who haven’t quite been ready to make the jump to the Premier League.

Spence’s future in North London remains unclear while Clarke has ended up back in the EFL with Sunderland. Neither Spurs nor Gray will want his career to head in the same way if he makes the jump too quickly.
This could be a deal for Tottenham to revisit in a year, but it feels like an unnecessary risk to try and sign the 18-year-old when he hasn’t even had a taste of Premier League football. There are many more proven options available in the transfer market.
