Tottenham: Ange Postecoglou handed blow in Champions League push after Manchester City update
Tottenham could have suffered a new “blow” to their Champions League hopes by having a weekend without a fixture, according to Alan Hutton.
Ange Postecoglou’s side had been scheduled to face Manchester City on Saturday (20 April) but that game has now been postponed until 14 May after Pep Guardiola’s champions booked their place in the FA Cup semi-finals against Chelsea.
That postponement leaves Spurs with two weeks between fixtures, with Postecoglou’s next match seeing Mikel Arteta’s Gunners make the trip across North London, as they look to bounce back from their 4-0 defeat to Newcastle United.
While it had been suggested that Tottenham players could benefit from the extra time on the training field, Hutton believes most Spurs players would have preferred to get back to winning ways sooner rather than later.
“Possibly, it could be a blow,” Hutton told Tottenham News.
“The biggest thing for me when I was looking through everything was the fixtures they’ve got coming up. It’s not easy, there are teams that are all fighting at the top end, Chelsea are in there as well.
“Aston Villa are doing decently at this moment in time so it is going to be difficult for them. I always think when you have a disappointing result, you just want to get back on the pitch and play again because you want to put it right.
“So the longer you wait, the more you’re thinking about it, the more you’re talking about it and discussing it. It just feels like forever, so you just really want the next game to come around quickly.”
Will Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham qualify for the Champions League this season?
Tottenham know that they have to get back to winning ways quickly following their terrible defeat at St James’ Park. While the Spurs boss insists the top four doesn’t matter to him, Champions League qualification is crucial this term.

Spurs supporters wouldn’t have been confident of getting a result against Guardiola’s side off of the back of the loss in the North East, but at least the players would have had the chance to immediately bounce back.
Arsenal won’t be easy opposition and the Gunners will likely be more motivated than ever after defeats to Bayern Munich and Aston Villa, but Postecoglou will have to hope the extra week off will help his side get back to their best.
