John Wenham believes Radu Drăgușin can be an effective replacement for Cristian Romero at Tottenham.

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose feels confident about the club's long-term future in central defence.

It comes after TyC Sports reported (9 September) that Manchester United and Real Madrid have both approached Spurs about signing Romero.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano via his Daily Briefing (19 September), Tottenham plan to hold contract talks with Romero in the coming months as they look to keep hold of the centre-back.

However, Wenham - speaking exclusively to Tottenham News - still feels confident about the club's prospects should they be unable to agree a brand-new deal with Romero.

“I think Drăgușin could be a good replacement for Romero,” Wenham said.

“Especially after another year of him settling in with Tottenham. However, this would of course only be if we couldn’t agree fresh terms with Romero.

“In addition, we have got Ashley Phillips who is developing well, as well as the potential of Alfie Dorrington and Luka Vušković.

“Central defence is the position I feel very confident about at Tottenham.”

Radu Drăgușin to replace Cristian Romero at Tottenham?

Romero has won the World Cup and two Copa Americas with Argentina. Therefore, he will be keen to start lifting silverware at club level too.

As a result, unless Spurs really push on this season, it might be difficult for the 26-year-old to refuse an offer from Real Madrid.

However, Ange Postecoglou will feel confident in the knowledge that he has some talented prospects who could fill the void left behind should Romero leave.

Drăgușin is one of those, while Phillips could soon emerge on the first-team radar with a Premier League loan moved mooted for the 19-year-old.
