Tottenham agree deal with ‘best central defender of his age’ – Exclusive
Tottenham have some talented defenders on their books in North London.
When Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are fit, the duo make up one of the Premier League’s best centre-back pairings.
Therefore, should both players remain in North London next season, getting in ahead of them will be difficult for Spurs’ other centre-backs.
However, one youngster could prove to be a long-term heir for Romero or van de Ven.
Junai Byfield signs Tottenham scholarship
Junai Byfield has signed a scholarship contract with Tottenham.
The young gem is considered one of the most promising talents of his cohort. Therefore, he could be promoted to the Under-21s next season, which would allow him to make an impression on Thomas Frank.
Expectations for Byfield have never been higher, and Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes the 16-year-old is the best his age group has to offer.
“Byfield, for me, is the best central defender of his age across the entire country,” Wenham said.
“And that’s backed up by the fact that he always starts for England at every age group level he’s in.
“Powerful on the ball, scores goals, a real leader, has already trained for Tottenham’s first team on multiple occasions. He is a player Tottenham really like.”
Luka Vuskovic shines against Reading
Luka Vuskovic is another young defender who has impressed at Tottenham.
The Croatian made his first appearance in a Spurs shirt during their 2-0 pre-season victory over Reading (19 July), making an instant impact. The defender headed the ball into Will Lankshear’s path for the opening goal while finding the back of the net himself for Spurs’ second.

There is no doubt that he was overjoyed to bag a goal and an assist on his debut, but no more than Tottenham fans, who were lost for words. Already, he has been hailed as one of the best talents in his generation, and his performances on Saturday cemented that narrative.
As a result, Spurs supporters will be waiting in anticipation for him to take to the pitch again.
