Tottenham ace Yves Bissouma urged to be more ‘streetwise’ after what happened

We’re delighted to welcome former Scotland right-back Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium…

Former Tottenham defender Alan Hutton has urged Yves Bissouma to become more “streetwise” after his second red card of the season.

The Mali international was shown a straight red card in the 2-0 win at Nottingham Forest on Friday (15 December) for a high challenge on Ryan Yates, after a VAR intervention.

It was the second time Bissouma has seen red this season, the last coming in a 1-0 win at Luton on 7 October for a baffling dive when already on a yellow card.

Bissouma is consequently suspended for the next four matches and may not play for Spurs again potentially until February due to his involvement at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Hutton does not think Bissouma is a nasty player but does acknowledge he needs to wise up and avoid getting into similar trouble in the future.

Speaking to Tottenham News, he said: “Yeah, I think it was a red card just for how high it was.

“There was no real malice in it, no real intent to go and hurt anyone. I think it’s just he catches Yates so high up in the leg you have to consider it dangerous and that’s his second (red card this season).

“I think it’s something he has to try and get it out of his game, he doesn’t seem to be that guy where it’s a pure nasty streak. I think sometimes maybe the ball just runs away from him, he thinks he can get it, thinks he can nick it, he can’t quite get there.

“So is it a red card? He’ll know it is, and you just have to move on, but you need to be a little bit more streetwise when it comes to these situations.”

Bissouma has started 15 Premier League games this season, already five more than he started last term when he endured a difficult first campaign after joining from Brighton.

Spurs sit fifth in the top flight, just a point shy of fourth-place Manchester City, following back-to-back wins over Newcastle United and Forest.
