Tottenham: Absolute concern Liverpool could poach Ange Postecoglou to replace Jurgen Klopp

Paul Robinson is “absolutely concerned” by the threat of Liverpool attempting to appoint Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou.

Jurgen Klopp announced on 26 January that he will leave Anfield at the end of the season and the Spurs boss has been linked as a possible successor after impressing in the Premier League off the back of winning five domestic trophies out of six in two seasons at Celtic.

The ex-England keeper is confident that if the Australian is successful in steering Tottenham into the Champions League this term he won’t be going anywhere, but if he doesn’t qualify and is offered the vacant Reds job he says it would be a worrying prospect in North London.

However, he has cautioned anyone who may be in line to follow Klopp that following the German will be a “hell of a big task” as one of the best managers in the Merseyside club’s history.

He told Tottenham News: “I’m absolutely concerned that Ange would go yeah. I mean you look at the impact that he’s had at Tottenham but at the end of the day, Tottenham are not going to be in the Champions League next season potentially if they’re not in the top four.

“If he gets them in the Champions League then absolutely I suspect he will stay, but if they’re not and Liverpool come knocking then we know the draw that the Champions League has, and the financial effect that it has as well.

“But for me, I’ve said it before, I wouldn’t want to be the next man in [at Anfield]. The relationship that Jurgen Klopp’s got with these supporters and this football club, and he could potentially walk away with numerous pieces of silverware still this season, they’re still competing on four fronts let’s not forget.

“So he could walk away from this club being one of the best managers to ever tread the Anfield dug-out, the relationship and respect that he’s got with the fans, for somebody to pick that baton up and carry that on is going to be one hell of a big task, regardless of who it is.

Ange Postecoglou exit fear if Champions League missed at Spurs

Jurgen Klopp is a shock name linked with Tottenham

A direct switch from Spurs to Anfield would be very surprising, and given he only signed a four-year deal in the summer Daniel Levy would surely insist on huge compensation if it were to become a reality.

What constitutes a successful season for Postecoglou at Tottenham is open to debate at present, as expectations weren’t high for the former Parkhead boss when he was losing Harry Kane ahead of the season.

His excellent unbeaten start until the 4-1 home defeat to Chelsea on 6 November changed that entirely as an unlikely title charge looked to be on, but stuttering form has left the club fifth so if it was Champions League or bust it could be the latter.

In other Tottenham news, a January signing’s future with the club is already in doubt with Spurs lining up an “excellent” replacement.
