Timo Werner set to face Tottenham axe v Wolves as ‘excellent’ Son Heung-min decision made

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou will start Son Heung-min ahead of Timo Werner when his side face Wolves in the Premier League, according to Alan Hutton.

Spurs welcome Gary O’Neil’s side to North London on Saturday (17 February) as they look to extend their unbeaten run to four matches following their stoppage-time win over Brighton last time out in the Premier League.

Werner was picked ahead of Son for that clash, with the South Korean international introduced from the bench having only recently returned from the Asian Cup, where his side crashed out of the competition with a semi-final defeat to Jordan.

Immediately after coming, the Spurs skipper impacted proceedings and it was his excellent ball into the penalty area that allowed Brennan Johnson to fire home the late winner and Hutton expects Postecoglou to start the 30-year-old following that cameo.

“I think he’ll start him,” Hutton told Tottenham News.

“I think probably Werner will come out and Richarlison will play through the middle with Maddison and then you’ve got to pick between Kulusevski and Brennan Johnson on the other side.

“Son is too big a player to leave out. He’s obviously fit, he’s focused and he’s ready to come back into the team against a Wolves side who under Gary O’Neil have been excellent so they’re going to have to have their top players out on the pitch to really perform.

“It will be a tough game, part of me thinks it could go either way, but I’d just edge Tottenham.”

Will Son Heung-min start for Tottenham against Wolves?

When fit, Son has been a mainstay of Postecoglou’s Tottenham side for most of the season and it seems almost certain that Werner will be the man to make way for the returning Spurs skipper.

The German has impressed since arriving in North London, picking up two assists in four matches. But his wastefulness in front of goal has harmed Spurs as he has repeatedly missed excellent chances with poor efforts in the final third.

Richarlison’s goalscoring run has made him almost undroppable and neither Son nor Werner tend to play on the right wing. It seems only natural that the Leipzig loanee will be the man to drop to the bench to allow Spurs’ skipper to impact proceedings from the off against Wolves.
