Timo Werner finished at Tottenham as Ange Postecoglou transfer call made after Wednesday update
Tottenham loanee Timo Werner’s hopes of a permanent transfer to North London could have been ended by a new injury blow, according to Alan Hutton.
The German international joined Ange Postecoglou’s side in the January transfer window on an initial loan deal, but Spurs have the option to make his stay permanent for a reported fee of around £15million this summer [Sky Sports, 10 January].
Werner is keen to extend his stay with the Lilywhites, but reports suggest Spurs are yet to make a final decision over his future [Fabrizio Romano, 6 April]. However, Postecoglou has now confirmed the RB Leipzig loanee will miss the remainder of the season through injury [James Olley, 1 May]
While the Spurs fanbase has been left divided by Werner since his arrival, Hutton admits that he thinks that the 28-year-old “hasn’t done enough” to earn a permanent switch and expects Spurs to send him back to Germany.
“Possibly, because I feel the same,” Hutton told Tottenham News.
“My opinion doesn’t matter to Spurs but my opinion is that he hasn’t done enough. He’s got the attributes to go and change games and be the difference-maker, but we don’t see it enough.
“For them to be sitting there right now thinking going I’m not sure, should we do it? Should we not? It’s probably going to come down to money, wages and different things like that. He’s definitely got something, it’s just that he gets into good positions and I don’t think he takes advantage enough.
“That was always the question mark over him at different clubs as well. So it will be an interesting one to see what direction they go in and what other targets they’re looking at.
“But at this moment in time, I’m still questioning whether he has done enough?”
Will Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou sign Timo Werner permanently after new injury update?
In 13 Premier League appearances, Werner has managed to score two goals and lay on three assits for his teammates. While a reasonable return, it isn’t the sort of haul supporters were expecting to see from their new number nine.
While the fee required to bring him to North London permanently this summer is a modest one, that money could well be better spent elsewhere, especially given the strength in depth Postecoglou already possesses going forward.
A strong end to the season could well have been enough to convince Daniel Levy and the Spurs recruitment team to dip into their wallets, but with that now out of the question, it’s hard to see a way back for Werner at Spurs.
Perhaps, Postecoglou and his team could surprise everyone and choose to act their buy-option regardless of the situation but that seems unlikely at this moment in time.
